Indonesia Internet Show Press Release 2 Nov 2012

Online disaster recovery in Indonesia: Having a website is great, hosting it through a 3rd party data centre is even better, but what happens when the elements strike? Recently a fire was reported at Indonesian Data Centre Duren III, causing several large and important sites to be inaccessible for some time. Large national news sites like Detik.com were down and even the national airline’s web portal garudaindonesia.com was still unavailable at the time of writing. Some sites, such as Detik, are fully hosted at this data centre, located in the centre of Jakarta. Unexpected events like this can have serious impacts on operations and performance, particularly when a regularly-visited website is inaccessible for so long.

Luckily, social media has been able to step in to reassure readers and followers that the situation is under control. For a country like Indonesia where web users are highly mobile and social, Twitter acts as a fantastic tool when emergencies strike. It allows both updates on the situation, as well as the ability to disseminate content out to the audience base quickly and effectively. Sites hosted elsewhere, like blogs and third party sites, can also help in the interim while a repair or recovery is underway.

But what about the future for Indonesia’s tech giants? Surely this can’t be allowed to happen again. Unfortunately however, this enormous nation is all too prone to natural disasters, so there needs to be contingency plans in place. Even though the fire in question was not caused by a natural disaster, it does bring to mind the possibility of such occurrences for whatever reason. A good option seems to be moving towards a cloud-based hosting infrastructure, particularly to protect massive amounts of data and information. Security on the cloud is always an issue, particularly in emerging markets where the infrastructure is still a work in progress.

Issues like this are definitely going to be discussed during the Cloud and Big Data track at The Internet Show Indonesia this December. Join us to share your thoughts about how your company is pre-empting downtime and data-loss with secure infrastructure technology!
